17,84 km in 5:25 h through Glenveagh National Park<\/strong><\/p>\n

Glenveagh National Park is situated in County Donegal, about a half an hour drive from Letterkenny.<\/p>\n

Arriving in the visitor center which was less than deserted, a friendly assistant took the time to explain the different hiking routes, none of which being really demanding. Her recommendation was to take the red route, starting at Glenveagh Castle and passing a waterfall. Unfortunately both of the longer routes were one-way hiking paths, so we would need to return the same way.<\/p>\n

We could have covered the four kilometers distance between the parking lot (where the visitor center is situated) to the castle with a shuttle bus, but we didn\u2019t opt for that. Still, it\u2019s a great thing for elderly people or if you\u2019re short of time, as the 19th century castle itself is a nice place for having afternoon tea, take a tour or just wander through the palm gardens surrounding the castle. (We went in to have some coffee later on\u2026 \ud83d\ude09 )<\/p>\n

But first things first, off to exploring the waterfall. After four additional kilometers which you can then only go by foot, we finally got to see the waterfall.<\/p>\n

On the way, we fought our way forward overcoming countless swarms of mosquitos. Really persistent beasts, they were even sticking to my jacket when I waved my arms and actively tried to hake them off.<\/p>\n

We eventually got to see the waterfall, although from a safe distance, as it was on the opposite side of the small river that feeds the lake in the stretched valley. It took us no time to decide we wanted to sit right next to where the water comes down and rest, and this would be the ideal opportunity to test our new hiking boots\u2026 It turned out to be all \u201eMorast Aue\u201c and Daniel\u2019s shoes were soaking wet afterwards. Well, that was our little adventure after all.<\/p>\n

In the end it was really worth it to be standing at the foot of the fall, overlooking the valley from a different point of view, having a steep \u201eFelswand\u201c in our backs. Although we only allowed ourselves a quick halt (Daniel was slightly panicking when he saw two figures at the opposite side staring and waving at us – my guess is they just wanted to make sure we\u2019re ok) we really enjoyed the nature and the fresh air. Despite the fact that we weren\u2019t finishing the whole path but decided to return to the castle instead this made a great and relaxing day that would eventually be topped by the evening entertainment at the pub tonight.<\/p>\n

After a quick lunch and the mandatory cup of black tea we are good to aim for the top of the hill, the most demanding part of our hike today: Climbing up the Western mountain top to overlook Glenveagh Valley is really worth it!<\/p>\n

\/\/ National Park: Glenveagh<\/a><\/p>\n

Frisch aus den Federn hatten wir uns heute dazu entschieden, den Glenveagh Nationalpark zu erwandern. Von Letterkenny ist der ca. eine halbe Stunde Fahrt entfernt.<\/p>\n

Im Besucherzentrum, das einen Preis f\u00fcr sein \u00f6kologisches Design gewonnen hatte, herrscht Langeweile. Als ich das gelesen hatte, hab ich mich schon gewundert, was wohl \u00f6kologisches Design sein k\u00f6nnte – nun ja, es sieht ein bisschen so aus, als h\u00e4tte man die Hobbitlandschaft auf einen Bungalow gesetzt.<\/p>\n

Wir bekommen dort erkl\u00e4rt, welche der drei offiziellen Wanderrouten wir nehmen k\u00f6nnen. Keine davon ist besonders anspruchsvoll. So folgen wir den Tipp, ab Glenveagh Castle die rote Route zu nehmen, um einen Wasserfall zu passieren. Leider ist keine der beiden l\u00e4ngeren Routen ein Rundweg, sondern nur Sackgassen, die man auch wieder zur\u00fccklaufen muss.<\/p>\n

Vom Parkeingang bis zum Schloss sind es vier Kilometer, die man nicht mit dem eigenen Auto zur\u00fccklegen darf. Es gibt zwar einen Shuttlebus f\u00fcr zwei Euro, wir entscheiden uns aber daf\u00fcr, die Distanz zu laufen. Ich glaube, f\u00fcr Ausfl\u00fcgler, die nicht viel Zeit haben oder nicht gut zu Fu\u00df sind, ist das eine gute M\u00f6glichkeit, sich das malerisch an einem See gelegene Schloss aus dem 19. Jahrhundert anzuschauen. Dort gibt es F\u00fchrungen, alternativ kann man aber auch einfach in den palmenbewachsenen G\u00e4rten wandern oder zu Kaffee und Kuchen vorbeischauen. Letzteres haben wir uns sp\u00e4ter noch geg\u00f6nnt.<\/p>\n

Aber erstmal die „Arbeit“, also auf zum Wasserfall. Vom Schloss aus erreicht man diesen nach ca. vier weiteren Kilometern zu Fu\u00df. Auf dem Weg schlagen wir uns tapfer durch unz\u00e4hlige M\u00fcckenschw\u00e4rme. Hartn\u00e4ckige Biester, die sogar dann auf der Kleidung sitzen bleiben, wenn man versucht, sie aktiv wegzuwischen. Angekommen auf H\u00f6he des Wasserfalls, der den Flusslauf zum See speist, k\u00f6nnen wir den dann leider nur aus der Ferne sehen, denn der Wanderweg lag auf der anderen Seite des langgezogenen Tals.<\/p>\n

Da uns „nur“ ein kleiner Flusslauf von der anderen Seite trennt, beschlie\u00dfen wir kurzerhand, unsere neuen Wanderschuhe einem H\u00e4rtetest zu unterziehen und die zugegeben ein wenig morastigen Auen nebst Fluss zu \u00fcberqueren – was sich als etwas abenteuerlich entpuppte und Daniel auf dem R\u00fcckweg noch nasse F\u00fc\u00dfe bescheren sollte.<\/p>\n

Trotzdem k\u00e4mpfen wir uns voran und k\u00f6nnen am Fu\u00df einer steilen Felswand den Wasserfall endlich von nahem betrachten. Ziemlich cool.<\/p>\n

Da die Aktion schon einiges an Zeit gekostet hatte und bei Daniel pl\u00f6tzlich Panik ausbricht ob zwei winkender Gestalten auf der Wanderweg-Seite, genehmigen wir uns nur eine kurze Rast und teilen uns einen Cookie als St\u00e4rkung, bevor es auf den R\u00fcckweg geht.<\/p>\n

Der offizielle Wanderweg h\u00e4tte noch weitergef\u00fchrt, unsere Tagesplanung sieht aber noch einen entspannten R\u00fcckweg und abendlichen Pub-Besuch vor, daher kehren wir zum Schloss zur\u00fcck.<\/p>\n

Mit einem Mitagessen und der obligatorischen Tasse Schwarztee im Bauch erklimmen wir dann den anstrengenden Part des Weges, der uns vom westlichen Bergkamm eine tolle Aussicht auf das Schloss und das Tal insgesamt bietet. Das hat sich gelohnt!<\/p>\n
